The Weavers of GREECE

The cultural organization Branding Heritage (BH) in the framework of its actions for the promotion of cultural heritage is planning a multidimensional project with the aim of preserving the traditional art of weaving and the profession of the weaver, but also its exploitation in the present day, emphasizing to sustainability in a modern economic, social and cultural environment.

The ultimate goal is to implement the project in various regions of the country with a tradition in weaving, to highlight the importance of the partnership of tradition with modern business and to create a modern database of Greek weaving artisans that will contribute significantly to the professional presentation of this ancient art and its dynamic promotion within and outside borders.

REGION WHERE THE RECORDING BEGAN: CRETE

The organization’s recording project has started from Crete as the art of weaving is intertwined with the history and tradition of the island. With the support and auspices of the Ministry of Culture and Sports and the Region of Crete, in collaboration with the Development Association of Women Entrepreneurs of Crete and Knowl – Social Entreprise for Education and Lifelong Learning, we are recording the artisans of the place. The project envisages the creation of a modern DATA BASE (profile & portfolio) of textile professionals, manuals of basic techniques and a training program for skill development. The material (photos, creations, videos, CV, contact information) related to the art of each weaver who wishes to participate in the program will be posted in a special section on the Branding Heritage website entitled “The Weavers of Crete” and will be freely accessible . After Crete, the recording will continue in Peloponnese:

In MESSINIA the project will be implemented in collaboration with the Lyceum Club of Greek Women and the support of the G. & V. Karelia Foundation and the Textile Industry P.K. FRENTZOS S.A., while in LAKONIA (Geraki) with the support of the Hellenic Ministry of Culture & Sports.
