The Gonos Silk Weavers and Weavers craft began in late 1895 in Kalamata. Its founder was Angeliki Gonos. The Gonos business began as a cottage industry when the great-grandmother of the family, Angeliki, raised silkworms, then wove the silk on hand-operated looms and then sold it at fairs, as was customary in those years in the trade. The systematic organization of the business began in 1920 and before the war it was considered one of the most modern silk factories. Panagiotis Gonos industrialized the business and in 1950 the first electronic silk looms began to operate, thus experiencing greater growth. In 1980, his son and grandson of grandmother Angeliki, Giannis (1 photo), took over and continues to run the business today, while his own son, Panagiotis Gkonos (1 photo), is now actively involved. The business is slowly being passed on to the new generation.
